How to care for your
Denture
Proper denture care is important for both the
health of your denture and mouth. Here are some
tips:
- Handle dentures with great
care. To avoid accidently dropping dentures
stand over a folded towel or a full sink of water when handling
them.
- Brush and rinse your dentures
daily. Like natural teeth, dentures must be
brushed daily to remove food and plaque. Brushing also helps
prevent the development of permanent stains on the denture. Avoid
using a hard-bristled brush as it can wear down dentures. Only use
soft-bristled brushes that are specifically designed for cleaning
dentures. In between brushings rinse your dentures after every
meal.
- Clean with a denture
cleaner. Hand soap or mild dishwashing
liquid can be used for cleaning dentures. Household cleaners and
many types of toothpaste are too abrasive for your denture and
should not be used. Also avoid bleach and vinegar as this may
whiten the pink portion of the denture.
- Denture care when not being
worn. Dentures need to be kept moist when
not being worn so they do not dry out or lose their shape. When not
being worn dentures should be placed in a denture cleanser soaking
solution or water. Dentures should never be placed in hot water, as
it can cause them to warp.
What to
expect:
- Your first few weeks your new denture(s) will
feel foreign when placed in your mouth. It may take several days or
even a few weeks before you feel accustomed to
them.
- It is common to experience a sore spot after
first wearing a denture(s). They can be relieved with very little
effort on your next appointment, which is usually in one week.
Please call the office if you need to come in before
then.
- The new bite may not feel completely
comfortable for a period of days. We will adjust the contacting
surfaces at your next dental visit.
